Daycare Red Flags: 10 Signs to Walk Away From a Childcare Center

Not all daycare centers are created equal. Here are 10 warning signs that a childcare program may not be safe or high-quality — and what to look for instead.

Why Red Flags Matter

Choosing a daycare center is one of the most important decisions you'll make as a parent. Most centers are safe and caring — but some are not. Knowing what to look for during a tour can save you from placing your child in an unsafe or low-quality environment.

Red Flag #1: They Won't Let You Visit Unannounced

Quality childcare programs welcome parent drop-ins. If a center requires 48 hours notice for every visit, or becomes defensive when you show up unexpectedly, ask why. You should be able to visit your child at any time during operating hours once enrolled.

Red Flag #2: Staff Are on Their Phones Around Children

This is a safety and quality issue. Caregivers who are scrolling their phones aren't supervising children, aren't engaging them, and can't respond quickly to falls or conflicts. If you see this during a tour, it's policy — not an accident.

Red Flag #3: High Staff Turnover

Ask how long the lead teachers have been at the center. If the answer is "a few months" or you see a lot of temp or substitute staff, turnover is high. High turnover signals low pay, poor management, or a stressful environment — and it's terrible for children who depend on consistent relationships.

Red Flag #4: Vague Answers to Your Questions

When you ask "What's your staff-to-child ratio in the toddler room?" the answer should be a specific number, not "Oh, we always make sure there are enough staff." Vague answers about ratios, discipline policy, or curriculum mean the program isn't clear on — or isn't following — its own standards.

Red Flag #5: The Environment Feels Chaotic or Unsafe

Look at the physical space. Are toys and materials organized and accessible? Is the outdoor play area well-maintained and free of hazards? Are children running in ways that seem out of control? A little noise is normal — chaos isn't.

Red Flag #6: Children Seem Distressed or Ignored

Watch the children during your tour. Are they engaged and active? Are staff getting down to their level and interacting? A child crying and being ignored, or children sitting in front of screens for extended periods, is a serious concern.

Red Flag #7: Unclear or Harsh Discipline Policy

Ask directly: "What do you do when a child has a tantrum or hits another child?" Any answer involving time-outs in isolated spaces, yelling, physical discipline, or humiliation is unacceptable. Good centers use redirection, natural consequences, and emotion coaching.

Red Flag #8: Poor Hygiene and Cleanliness

Young children are germ factories — but a quality center stays on top of it. Look for:

  • Staff washing hands after diaper changes
  • Clean diaper changing surfaces
  • Regular toy sanitization
  • Clean bathrooms and food prep areas

A center that's consistently dirty is cutting corners on more than just cleaning.

Red Flag #9: No Current License or Expired Inspections

All licensed centers must pass periodic health and safety inspections. Ask to see their current license and recent inspection report. In most states, you can look up inspection history online. If a center is unlicensed or has serious outstanding violations, walk away.

Red Flag #10: Something Just Feels Wrong

Your instincts exist for a reason. If a director seems dismissive, if staff seem afraid to speak freely in front of management, or if you leave a tour feeling uneasy — pay attention to that. You don't need to articulate exactly what bothered you to trust that it did.

What to Look for Instead

The opposite of these red flags:

  • ✅ Warm, consistent staff who know each child by name
  • ✅ Low ratios and adequate supervision at all times
  • ✅ Clear written policies for discipline, illness, and emergencies
  • ✅ Daily parent communication (app, log, or pickup conversation)
  • ✅ NAEYC accreditation or state quality rating
  • ✅ Recent clean inspection report
