The difference between a great daycare and an average one rarely shows up in brochures. It shows up in how staff respond to these specific questions. Most parents ask about hours and price. These questions dig deeper.

About Staffing (Ask These First)

  1. What is your current staff-to-child ratio right now, not the posted ratio? — High-quality centers maintain ratios even when understaffed.
  2. How long has your lead teacher in the infant/toddler room been here? — Low turnover = stability and quality.
  3. What happens when a teacher calls in sick? — Do ratios stay the same or does one teacher cover two rooms?
  4. What training do your teachers have beyond the state minimum? — CDA, ECE degree, Infant-Toddler specialization are all positives.
  5. What was your staff turnover rate last year? — Under 20% is excellent. Over 40% is a warning sign.

About Safety and Health

  1. Can I see your last inspection report? High-quality centers have it ready and share it willingly.
  2. How do you handle a child who won't stop crying? — Listen for empathy vs frustration.
  3. What is your sick child policy? — Clear exclusion criteria protect all children.
  4. Who has access to the building during the day? — Secure entry is non-negotiable.
  5. What is your safe sleep policy for infants? — Should be back-to-sleep, no blankets or positioners.

About Curriculum and Daily Life

  1. Walk me through a typical day for a [age] child.
  2. How much outdoor time do children get daily? — NAEYC recommends at least 60–90 min for preschoolers.
  3. How do you handle transitions (nap, meals, drop-off)?
  4. How do you communicate with parents during the day? — App updates, photos, or only at pickup?
  5. What is your philosophy on screen time? — AAP recommends zero for under 2.

About Discipline and Behavior

  1. What is your discipline policy? — Should be redirection and positive reinforcement, never punitive isolation or shame.
  2. How do you handle a child who bites or hits?
  3. What would cause a child to be expelled from the program? — Know the boundaries upfront.

Practical and Administrative

  1. What are your holiday and closure dates for the year?
  2. What is your policy if I need to withdraw with short notice?
  3. Do you accept childcare subsidies/vouchers?
  4. What does the daily fee include — meals, sunscreen, supplies?
  5. Is there a waitlist, and how far in advance should I apply?
  6. May I drop in unannounced after enrollment? — The answer should always be yes.
  7. What do you wish more parents asked you? — Reveals the director's values.
