California has the largest childcare market in the US — and one of the most complex systems of licensing, subsidies, and free programs. Here's your roadmap.
California Licensing Types (CCLD)
The Community Care Licensing Division (CCLD) licenses all childcare in California:
- Child Care Center: Any facility caring for 9+ children; must meet extensive facility, staffing, and curriculum requirements
- Family Child Care Home (Large): 8–14 children in a residence; licensed by CCLD
- Family Child Care Home (Small): Up to 8 children; CCLD licensed
